To many, Augmented Reality (AR) is a futuristic term; you may not understand what it is or what it does. However, it has slowly been integrated into our daily lives – with fashion brands using AR for virtual try-ons or even appliance stores using AR to let customers see how furniture may look in their space. More recently, we’re seeing AR being used in social media filters, making filters more interactive and engaging for short form video content.

Our very own Songfluencer CEO, Johnny Cloherty and YO SUZY CEO, Suzy Yoder discussed the rise of Augmented Reality as social media filters in Business Insider here.

What is an AR Filter and how does it work?
An AR Filter is an interactive tool that uses augmented reality technology to alter the appearance of a person’s face, body, or the world around them, through their own mobile device’s camera. AR Filters are available within platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram. Brands and creators can make AR filters for each of these platforms on Snap’s Lens Studio, TikTok’s Effect House, or Meta’s Spark Studio.

How can I use influencers/Preffy with AR Filters?
If you launch an AR Filter on your own TikTok account and attach a song clip to your launch post, TikTok will then recommend that song for any other users of the filter. You can run a Preffy and/or Songfluencer campaign with us to guarantee usage and video creations posted with your filter. Alternately, if you don’t want to use your own filter, you can use Preffy and/or Songfluencer to launch the filter with your song on it on your behalf.

How can I evangelize my fans with an AR Filter?
If you have an established fan base, simply asking your fans in more “behind the scenes” ways to use your filter combined with your song is a very effective way to evangelize the base. For example, post it multiple times on your Instagram story, and mention that you will be re-posting fans’ stories that use the filter and tag you in them. If you have a text-message list, email list, Discord, or fan message group within a social platform or a site like Reddit, those are other good places to get the word out.

“Filter trends perform well since they work for a huge section of creators. Pairing a filter with a song is a great way to expose your track to a massive audience on the platform,” says Kevin Hupp (Songfluencer, Creative Manager)

Adds Suzy Yoder (Founder, YO SUZY), “Watching a filter connect with a song is always an exciting moment for an artist and a great example of how to use these platforms’ native tools to your advantage.”
